I don’t have a lot of time to blog this morning–so I’ll just give a couple of quick quotes that I read this morning that got me thinking:
“…we Christians would be utterly insane to envy people who pitch themselves out of the window of sin—on top of a skyscraper—to enjoy a vapor’s exhilaration of the freefall of greed, or the freefall of drugs, or power, or fame, or sex, or job success—and then death. We would just be insane to envy the world.”
~John Piper (see here)
“Thus says the LORD:
‘Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,
Let not the mighty man glory in his might,
Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;
But let him who glories glory in this,
That he understands and knows Me,
That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.
For in these I delight,’ says the LORD. ”
~Jeremiah 9:23-24
How easy it is to envy the world or to boast in the things of the world.
How foolish it is to envy the world or to boast in the things of the world.
For these things will fade like a vapor and nothing will be left.
But this…
to understand and to know God…
this is what will remain.
This is worth devoting my life to pursuing.
This is worth boasting about.
Don’t forget to take a look at Barbara H’s meme “The Week in Words”, where bloggers collect quotes they’ve read throughout the week.
So true — the pleasures of sin are for such a short season, and eternity is so long.
Yes! These are the things that I am trying to make my tweens understand. They envy so much of the secular world! my heart aches just thinking of the foolishness they long for!
Great reminders to keep God first in our hearts and minds!
I’ve been reading (finally) “Think” by John Piper. Today was about the wisdom of the world, so the thoughts you’re sharing go right along with that.
“We would just be insane to envy the world.”
So why do I still do it at times??? Lord, give me YOUR wisdom.
