Thankful Thursday: New and improved same old, same old

Producers are always eager to have buyers purchase the “new and improved” version of everything they see.

And some buyers are eager to get every “new and improved” version.

Others are more nostalgic, constantly longing for the “same old, same old”–and resisting new innovations whenever they come.

I prefer to grasp tight to the nostalgic past, reach towards the ever expanding future–and keep my feet firmly planted in today.

This week I’m thankful…

…for the new and improved DVD player that showed up on my doorstep this morning. (I installed it this evening–and now, for the first time in quite a while, I can actually watch a DVD on my computer if I want to.)

…for the new and improved work schedule I’ve created for myself. (I get my work done so much better if I go into the office early, before others arrive. Now I just need to leave at a corresponding time instead of just staying ten or more hours.)

…for the new and improved book Now, Discover Your Strengths that my boss bought me (and the rest of her direct reports. Many people might be less than excited to have reading assigned them from a boss. I’m ecstatic.)

…for the same old same old Bible that I’ve been reading since my trip to Sweden in 2003. (It’s worn, it’s torn, it’s been dropped in the toilet–but it’s also got my notes, my underlinings, and memories of the peaks and the valleys God’s brought me through.)

…for the same old same old routines that make dealing with the less-routine parts of work life less bothersome (It’s amazing how routines impose their own calm amidst turmoil.)

…for the same old same old computer that I’ve been using since I started college–that hasn’t yet given up the ghost.

Most of all, I’m thankful for the One who is the same yesterday, today, and forever–but Who is so immense, so unfathomable that my knowledge of Him can be new and improved every day!

Thankful Thursday: Spare Thanks

It’s been a long week, a busy week. I don’t have time or energy to be long. So I’ll just offer these spare words of thanks.

Thankful Thursday banner

This week I’m thankful…

…for unexpected guests who didn’t stay long

…for hosts and hostesses who don’t mind that I’ve stayed long

…for non-alcoholic hilarity on a Wednesday night

…for prescriptions transferred and picked up

…for whites to be tie-dyed purchased

…for food on the stove to be eaten

And for a God who is on the throne, above every power of this earth.

Thankful Thursday: Social and other forms of media

Social media can be a blessing and a curse. It has its pros and its cons. It has its worshipers and its detractors.

I am thankful that God God has blessed me with many of the pros of social media, is redeeming me from the curse of many of the cons, and is teaching me to worship HIM in all and above all.

This week I’m thankful…

…for being able to Skype with my sister Grace for an hour–mostly just chatting at each other as we surfed the internet, but time spent in one another’s company nonetheless.

…for the many wonderful bloggie friends I’ve made in the past years of blogging. I am so blessed by the encouragement and challenges that I receive from so many of you.

…for the ability to use Facebook to stay in touch with friends old and new (and to arrange a get together with my friend and sister-out-law Joanna for when I’m next in Lincoln)

…for the family e-mail list that keeps me abreast of what’s going on in the Cook Clan

…for the cell phones that I and a new church friend can whip out of pockets, enabling us to exchange numbers so we can arrange to get together for lunch or coffee one of these days.

…for the friends who challenge me to examine my priorities in my online life

…for the conviction of the Holy Spirit regarding how I ought to spend my time, both on and off the web

…for the real life opportunities God has given me to minister to girls through my home and love of crafts

I am so thankful that God has placed me at this time in history, with these technologies–so that I might use them to glorify Him and so that He may use them to conform me into the image of His Son.

May my life, online and off, be a reflection of the greatness and holiness of God.

Thankful Thursday: Friends and Fellow-Transplants

I didn’t plan to find myself in Columbus, Nebraska. I interviewed for a job in Omaha–and got offered a job here.

A head-hunter matched my sister Anna to a job here.

Few of us really CHOSE to find ourselves in the east central part of Nebraska, in the greater Columbus area.

But here we are. And for that I am thankful.

This week, I’m thankful…

…for baking with my sister, her reading aloud from The Pioneer Woman Cooks while I dropped muffin batter into tins and rolled warm muffins in butter and sugar

…for Pampered Chef parties where Anna and Ruth and I bite our tongues while the rep tries to convince me that I should be a rep myself (If someone has just told you that she teaches cooking on a college level and that she regularly advises her students that they don’t need all the gadgets sold by companies like Pampered Chef…you probably SHOULDN’T suggest that if she’d just try your products she might just learn that “they’re not a want, they’re a need.”)

…for large hunks of beef and friends who will cut them into steaks for you (and laugh at you for rendering your own tallow from the trimmed fat.)

…for great reminders at Bible study that all work can be sanctified work (Thanks, Beth) and that it’s easy to lose focus at work but putting up reminders for yourself can help (Thanks, Teresa).

…for upcoming parties–hanging out this weekend with another who’ll be around town, a Valentines Party next month, drinks at my house in March (featuring SimplyThick!)

…for the Providence of God that brought me–and these–into this dinky little town at such a time as this

Thankful Thursday: Sickness

“Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” Job 2:10

The words trickled into my mind as I told my sister of my thankfulness that I had not yet experienced a bilious emesis (vomiting small intestine contents.)

I was forced to accept the truth of these words and follow up: “But if God should grant me a bilious emesis, I shall thank Him for it.”

Thankful Thursday banner

This week, I am thankful…

…that God is sovereign over both health and sickness–and that He will conform me to His image with whatever means He pleases

…that God is a gracious designer who has formed my immune system to work exactly as it is

…that God is merciful and never gives me more than I can handle (even when my whole GI tract is cramping and I can barely force myself to take in fluids)

…that God grants reprieve through a few moments of sleep here and there and a book that occasionally takes my mind off the pain my body is feeling

…that, as of yet, I have not experienced a bilious emesis. Stomach contents have come up, small intestine contents have gone down–and God is sovereignly wise and unfailing gracious, even should that circumstance change.

Thankful Thursday: The C(K)athys

When I first started traveling to Columbus, I was pleased that I would find myself in Columbus over Wednesday nights–the night the C/Kathy’s hosted their young professional’s Bible study. I eagerly rushed from work to Kathy’s, where the whole set of us transplants fellowshipped and were challenged and grew.

After a long Christmas break from Bible study, I was glad to get back into the swing of things last night…and it turned out, Bible study was even better than I’d hoped for.

Thankful Thursday banner

Today I’m thankful…

…for Cathy’s rave reviews of The Pioneer Woman’s blackberry cobbler (which I’d prepared for the Bible study crowd)

…for Kathy’s thoughtfulness in having a selection of teas available for us to enjoy (including several herbal varieties)

…for both K(C)athy’s encouragement that I share my shocking secrets with the newest member of our crew

…for Kathy’s reminder that “You will get done exactly what God wills you to get done.”

…for Cathy’s exhortation: “Have you considered taking a technology break?” And her follow up: “Don’t do it because I suggested it. Ask God what He would have you do.”

…for how God has used both of these women to bless me, to challenge me, and to conform me into the image of His Son.

Thankful Thursday: Work

Five years ago, when I was halfway through my undergraduate education in dietetics, I never would have guessed that I’d be working in long-term care.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like the idea. I just intended to go a different direction. Should I not end up married before the time came to get a first professional job, I’d try to find something in community nutrition, education in the community.

And that is what I tried for–but jobs in the community are few and far between (and not always that greatly funded.)

So instead of a community position, I found myself in Columbus, Nebraska as a long-term care dietitian. And I love it.

Thankful Thursday banner

Today I’m thankful…

…for a good first day at the two facilities I’m now consulting for (even if the previous dietitian couldn’t be there to orient me to the facilities)

…for a just the right length to-do list. Now that I’m caught up from my conference and am full-time, I have enough work to keep me busy but not so much that I’m scrambling to keep afloat.

…for affirmation from a coworker who thinks I’m doing a good job (Thanks, Jen!)

…for a visit from my consultant RD who was able to catch something I was doing inadequately so I could correct it (before it became an issue)

…for conversations with coworkers before weights meetings

…for dark chocolate from my Secret Santa in our post-Christmas exchange

Above all, I’m thankful that God, in His infinite wisdom, has chosen to place me as the in-house dietitian in one long term care facility and as consultant dietitian to two others. It isn’t what I would have chosen for myself, but apparently God’s better at choosing than I am!

Thankful Thursday: Clean, Warm, Well-Fed

Have you ever stopped to consider the great blessing of being clean, warm, and well-fed? It’s something I take for granted too often. But many people around the world and in ages past are not or have not consistently been clean, warm, and well-fed.

They might not have indoor plumbing or heated, running water. They might not have the soap, the toothpaste, the laundry detergent I take so for granted.

They might not have the money to heat their homes, or maybe they lack a heater. Their blankets may be thin and their homes drafty.

They may not have a grocery store nearby with a variety of nutritious foods. They may not have money to buy from such a store if it did exist. They might exist on a confined, unvarying diet–beans and rice day after day, for example.

So today, I am thankful that for those things.

Today, I am thankful…

…for the bathtub that lets me soak away my worries each evening in a pool of heated water

…for the washing machine that gets my clothes clean (even if the process is a bit more intensive than I’m used to)

…for the vacuum cleaner with which I prepare my home for guests

…for the heat pump that keeps my home warm by day

…for the heated blanket that keeps me warm by night

…for the car heater that keeps me warm when I venture outside my home in this brisk Nebraska winter

…for the free meals I get every day at work (for the small price of, well, trying everything and making sure it’s okay!)

…for my stuffed refrigerator, freezer, pantry, and cupboards. Even if I didn’t go to the store for weeks, I would not starve

…for Super Saver just down the road, with great prices and lots of good food

Beyond all that, I’m thankful…

…for the blood of Jesus Christ which cleanses us from all sin. (I John 1:7)

…for the wings under which I find refuge (Ps. 91:4)

…for the bread of life who make me never hunger again (John 6:35)

Thankful Thursday: People

Advent is a time of year when many people’s minds turn towards STUFF. What am I getting? What am I giving? What do I want? How will I decorate? What do I need? Buy more stuff. Stuff to eat. Stuff to wear. Stuff to decorate with. Stuff to give. Stuff to keep for ourselves.

This Christmas season, I’ve been blessed with plenty of STUFF–but I’ve been mostly blessed by the PEOPLE in my life.

Thankful Thursday banner

Today I’m thankful…

…that my little sister could come up to Columbus for the day and spend a bit of time with me and Anna

…that I was able to get a hold of my friend from church today–even though I didn’t know her phone number or address, or even the NAME of her business

…that my sister knew the name of Maria’s business so I could drop off my gifts for her

…that all of the kids happened to be there when I dropped by–and that we had some wonderful conversation while I was there

…that I have wonderful coworkers who I truly enjoy working with

…that I was able to catch up with an old classmate-turned-coworker today when she visited our facility

To the God who revealed Himself as a man, incarnate–
For the people He has granted me the privilege of knowing and loving–
I give thanks.

Thankful Thursday: The End(s)d

There are things we don’t like to see end–and things we can’t wait to see end. Ends can be happy–or they can be melancholy. This week, I’ve had some ends I’ve been expectantly anticipating–ends that have come at last.

Thankful Thursday banner

Today I’m thankful…

…for the END of commuting between Lincoln and Columbus

…for the END of the semester teaching at the University

…for the END of catching up from last month’s conference in Boston

…for the END of last night’s treacherous drive

When there’s so much going on in my life and so much tossing me in every direction, I’m thankful to have some of it come to an end.

And I’m thankful for the new beginnings every ending heralds.
